Whistler drivers take note: parking in the village is about to change.

Starting Tuesday, Nov. 17, the municipality will charge people to park in the Telus Conference Centre underground lot and at municipal hall. And the Resort Municipality of Whistler is also increasing the rates on Main Street and the conference centre surface lot.

The changes are part of a strategy that council approved in September in an attempt to increase the municipality's revenue while also decreasing the number of people who drive to the village.

Drivers can expect to pay the follow rates:

• For Main Street, municipal hall, and the conference centre surface lot, rates of $1 for the first hour, $2 for the second hour, $2 for the third hour, and $4 for the fourth hour.

• For Whistler Public Library and the first two levels of the conference centre's underground lots, rates will be $1 for the first hour, $2 for the second hour, $3 for the third hour, and $4 for the forth hour.

• For the third level of the conference centre under ground lots, rates are $9 flat for the day. For the fourth level, they are $58 for the month.

• The conference centre underground lot also will have a $5 evening rate between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Residents can get discounts by buying the municipality's in-car meters and paying rates of $1 for the first hour, $1 for the second hour, $2 for the third hour.

Meanwhile, many parking lots throughout Whistler will be closed to the public after Christmas as Olympic preparations ramp up.

Specifically, the conference centre's surface lot is closed to the public from Dec. 28 to April 4, and the underground lot is closed from Jan. 25 to April 4.

The day skier parking lots will also be inaccessible for a large period of the winter season. Individual lots will close at different times over the next few months, with almost all closed to the public from Feb. 1.

Also, skiers and snowboarders should be able to park on the Whistler Driving Range up until and after the Olympics this winter. Whistler Blackcomb will be releasing more details on who can park there and how much it will cost.
