Rob Boyd returns to WMSC

After more than five years coaching with the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, Rob Boyd is coming home.

The former World Cup ski racer - the first male Canadian skier to win a downhill on home soil in 1989 - got his start coaching with the Whistler Mountain Ski Club in 2002, but two years later got the call up to the national team as the women's speed coach. Under his guidance the team posted some of its top results, with Britt Janyk, Emily Brydon and Kelly VanderBeek finding the podium in recent years. The group became known as the Speed Queens after their particularly successful 2007-2008 season.

Now, with the 2010 Games in the history books, Boyd is returning to Whistler and the Whistler Mountain Ski Club to be closer to home and his wife and two young children. Committing to the national team means spending most of the winter and part of the summer on the road with the team.

"We are thrilled to have Rob rejoin our team and know all will benefit from his wealth of experience and true passion for the sport," said WMSC executive director Nigel Loring.

Boyd's title with the club is K2 Head Coach and Sport Development Manager, effective June 1. Among other things he will be involved in the long-term planning for the club, overseeing the club's training facilities (on-hill and off), and the continuing education of the club's other coaches.

Boyd's own career with the national ski team spanned 13 seasons, followed by three seasons racing professionally. He had six career podiums including three wins, and placed in the top 15 on the World Cup circuit 28 times.

The Whistler Mountain Ski Club has sent 22 athletes to the national team in its 42-year history, and four athletes to the national ski cross team.
