The RCMP continued to crack down on impaired drivers in Whistler over the weekend and despite a long and well-publicized campaign the police are continuing to turn up a large number of offenders.

One of the arrests last week was preceded by a crash.

Just before 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 20 th , the Whistler RCMP received a report of a sports car sliding into the concrete barrier on Highway 99 near Brandywine. They attended the scene and were made aware that the same vehicle was involved in another crash heading northbound at high speeds. No injuries were reported in either incident.

The RCMP found that the driver was displaying signs of impairment. He was arrested. At the detachment he provided two samples at 270 milligrams/per cent, or three times the current legal limit of 80 mg/per cent.

A 42-year-old male from North Vancouver was handed a 24-hour suspension, a 90-day driving prohibition and is facing charges of impaired driving and driving over 0.08.

At 5 p.m. on the same day RCMP received a report of a male urinating and vomiting in public then getting behind the wheel. It's also possible that the vehicle struck a cement wall while trying to navigate out of Lot A, before heading southbound. The RCMP intercepted the vehicle at Nordic Drive, and subsequently the driver was arrested and provided samples of 170 mg and 190 mg. A 49-year-old Whistler male is facing charges of impaired driving and driving over 80 mg. He received a 24-hour suspension and 90-day driving prohibition.

On Friday, June 18 at 6:25 a.m. the RCMP received a report of a suspected impaired driver heading southbound from the Green River Crossing. The car was weaving across both lanes of traffic, with speeds varying from 10 km/h to 90 km/h.

The RCMP pulled the vehicle over in Whistler at Spruce Grove. After the arrest the driver provided samples of 140 mg and 130 mg. A 21 year old from Whistler, who was in possession of a Learner's driving licence is facing charges of impaired driving, driving over 0.08, and received both a 24-hour and 90-day prohibition.

Also on Friday morning at 12:14 a.m. the RCMP stopped a vehicle near the parking lot entrance on Blackcomb Way. The driver was investigated and later provided samples of 220 and 210 mg, or almost three times the legal limit. A 30-year-old from Maple Ridge is facing impaired and over 0.08 charges, as well as temporary driving prohibitions.

The RCMP also handed down several 24-hour prohibitions over the past week, prompting the police to make this statement: "It is very alarming to be coming across this many impaired drivers, especially in today's day and age with all the education that is out there and multiple options that exist. There is no reason for people to be taking chances like this and getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle after having been drinking."

Cocaine found in drug arrests

The RCMP made several arrests related to drugs over the weekend.

At 2 a.m. on Friday, June 18 the RCMP stopped a male who was walking through the underground area of Lot A (conference centre) and found him to be in possession of a variety of drugs - some of which is believed to be cocaine, MDMA and other chemical drugs.

The male, a resident of Whistler, was subsequently arrested. Charges are pending.

Just after that arrest the Whistler RCMP stopped two vehicles that appeared to be following each other between parking lots. Both drivers were later found to be in possession of drugs, believed to be cocaine. One of the drivers also showed signs of impairment and was arrested for impaired driving. He was issued a 24-hour suspension and had his vehicle impounded.

The second driver, a 43-year-old Whistler male, was operating a tow truck when he was arrested and is also facing charges of possession.
