B.C.'s top golfers coming to Whistler

The Whistler Golf Club is hosting one of the most important tournaments of the year for the B.C. Professional Golfer's Association, which runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1.

The event is attracting club pros, PGA hopefuls and other top-tier golfers with a prize purse of $33,000. There is also a way for amateurs to get involved, playing alongside top pros.

According to Whistler Golf Club general manager Alan Kristmanson, the event - dubbed the Titleist FootJoy PGA of B.C. Championship, presented by Loft 8 and the B.C. Back Institute - will be huge.

"There will be 100 pros here, the top guys in the province," he said. "This is the biggest championship of the year for the provincial tour, the one that all the guys come to."

The event gets underway on Monday with morning and afternoon Pro-Am competitions that pit amateurs against top golf pros. In a foursome, two pros play their own balls while two amateurs play a scramble, shooting from the best ball position and working together.

Registration is from 6:30 a.m. on Monday, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Registration for the afternoon Pro-Am gets underway at 11:30 a.m., with the shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. There is a luncheon at 1 p.m. for the morning players and a dinner at 6:30 p.m.

The PGA of B.C. Championship is a 54-hole stroke play tournament, which includes the pro scores from Monday's Pro-Am, and two more rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday that tee off at 7:30 a.m.

The field will include pros from local golf clubs, as well as some of the top golfers in the province. That group includes some local golf pros, as well as defending champion Doug Morgan, long-distance champ Ed Boudreau and Bryn Parry - a pro who came within a stroke of earning his PGA card.

The public is encouraged to come out and watch at no charge, and maybe pick up a few tips by watching top pros up close.
