WMSC skiers head to Hemlock

Laura Swaffield places first in the GS run

Members of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club K1 (age 11 and 12) team headed up the long road to Hemlock Valley this past weekend for a Tech Coast Zone Race, uncertain if any races would be held in the pouring rain.

In the end, training was cancelled on Thursday and Friday's races were cancelled. However, organizers managed to get two women's giant slalom runs underway on Saturday and one men's run before a chairlift breakdown ended the race.

In the first GS run, Laura Swaffield of the WMSC placed first with a gap of 0.22 seconds. Bria Henderson was fifth, Katie Fleckenstein sixth, Gabrielle Smith sixth, Maggie Tuer eighth, Nicole Tobias 12th, Anna Gosney 14th and Rachel Kepl 15th, to round out the top 15.

Katie Fleckenstein led the way for the team in the second race, placing third. Laura Swaffield was fifth, Nicole Tobias eighth, Bria Henderson 10th, Gabrielle Smith 11th and Maggie Tuer 13th.

In the boys' first run, Alex Uryga and Finn Iles of the WMSC placed second and third. Also in the top 15 were Kasper Woolley in fifth, Max Kirshenblatt - injuring his lip on a ski pole - in seventh, Kyle Alexander in ninth, Zachary Yamaoka in 12th, Matthew Davie in 14th and Eric Lyall in 15th.

The athletes woke up on Sunday to another downpour and the remaining events were cancelled.
