Kokanee Valley Race Series is a snowy event

40 racers try their hand at the series

It seems like the thing to do if you want it to snow in Whistler is to host a Kokanee Valley Race Series Event.

As usual, Whistler Blackcomb groomers and events department managed to get the race off as planned with a single run only on Gandy Dancer. Heavy snow and wind scuttled the planned second run.

The lure of fresh powder kept the numbers down once again, but 40 racers turned out to try their hand at some gates.

The next event is a giant slalom on Lower Franz's on Jan. 27. Advance registration is $29 at Guest Relations, or you can pay $35 on the day of the race at Raven's Nest until 9:45 a.m. (still to be confirmed, so check the website).

The races are open to skiers, snowboarders and telemark racers alike, 19 years and older. There is an after-party following each event, where all participants have a chance to win draw prizes. If you take part in three or more races you're entered into a draw for your choice of a pair of 2012 Atomic race skis with bindings.
