The WAVE — Whistler and Valley Express — started a new schedule last week, with three additional vehicles on the road. The WAVE is the new name for Whistler Transit, which now has 15 buses on the road, up from the 12 that had been providing service throughout the valley. The additional buses mean express service between the village and Whistler Creek every 12-15 minutes during the day and a village shuttle every 7 1/2 minutes. The latest expansion in service is the fourth since local bus service was introduced to Whistler in 1991. WAVE is expected to carry more than 2 million passengers this year, a 250 per cent increase in ridership since 1995. While riders are catching the WAVE in Whistler, they likely won’t be catching it between Whistler and Pemberton until some time next year. In response to a letter and petition to mayor and council requesting bus service between Whistler and Pemberton, Councillor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden said last week the Transit Management Committee doesn’t feel such a route is economically feasible this winter. Councillor Kristi Wells responded that there are a number of different groups in the corridor who see public transportation between the towns as an important issue and perhaps some sort of partnership could be formed to facilitate the service.
