Parking in Lots 4 and 5 to stay free for now

Lot 5 paving put on hold

Pay parking is not coming to Day Lots 4 and 5 this week as originally planned.

In a press release out this evening Resort Municipality of Whistler officials confirmed that the implementation of pay parking in those lots and the new rate system is being delayed.

There was no information offered on the fiscal impact of this decision on the 2011 budget.

The statement also said that Lot 5 would not be paved as had originally been planned.

The move follows a special council meeting last week at which council members directed the Chief Administrative Officer to re-visit pay-parking including a re-negotiation of the rates, the cancelling of Lot 5 paving and the delay of the pay parking roll-out until the first two objectives could be met.

Staff continues to work on the pay parking plan and a report will be presented at the next council meeting June 21.

User-pay parking was implemented in Day Lots 1, 2, and 3 on June 28, 2010. Since then, the existing parking model has been evaluated by the Parking Lot Operating Committee; comprised of two senior officials from the Resort Municipality of Whistler and two from Whistler Blackcomb, with input from the community Transportation Advisory Group, the Whistler Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Whistler.

Anyone who has already purchased parking passes can get a refund at municpal hall during regular office hours.
