Squamish Oceanfront set for September

Rezoning would change lands from industrial to mix of uses including residential

Squamish Council under Mayor Greg Gardner has accomplished a lot since the 2008 elections, but with time ticking before the November municipal elections there's still one important matter to move forward.

According to an update from the Squamish Oceanfront Development Corporation (SODC), the Comprehensive Development Zoning plan will be presented at a public information session on Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Garibaldi Room at the Howe Sound Inn. Following this session the outgoing council will give the rezoning of the 103-acre parcel of lands first and second reading.

The final third and fourth readings will likely be completed by following councils, once the plans to convert an area mostly zoned as industrial into a mix of residential, commercial, recreational and educational, including 11 acres of new parks.

As well as the zoning, the SODC - a public corporation owned and operated by the District of Squamish to develop and sell the Oceanfront land - will be using the public information session to share plans for the 11 acres of parkland, and will update the public on the remediation of lands that were contaminated by past industrial uses.
