The Sea to Sky highway was closed for several hours Wednesday as emergency crews dealt with a fatal accident eight kilometres north of Lions Bay.

It's the second accident to cause a highway closure in less than a week, and the highway's second fatality this year.

Witness accounts indicate a white truck went off Highway 99 and hit the rock face then returned to the road and crashed into the centre barrier today (Feb. 22) Sgt. Wayne Pride of the Squamish RCMP said the accident was reported to police at 10:30 a.m. The truck was northbound and Pride said there was only one person in the vehicle.

The highway was closed while fire crews dealt with the flaming wreck.

Pride said the accident is under investigation by the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service along with the Squamish RCMP and Sea to Sky Traffic Services.

The name of the deceased driver has not been released.

According to Drive BC, a single lane in both directions of Highway 99 was maintained while the scene was cleaned up.

The weather was clear at the time of the accident.
