When Corien Speaker settles into her new desk at the municipal hall in Squamish she will be making history.
While women have held the position of chief administrative officer (CAO) in the past in an acting capacity, former councillor and life-long Squamish resident Paul Lalli said to the best of his knowledge this is the first time Squamish's top municipal hall job has been awarded permanently to a woman.
Speaker is coming to Squamish from Elkford, B.C., where she has been CAO since 2004.
The position was left open when Kevin Ramsay resigned from the job to take over as the CAO in Port Moody. Ramsay was with the District of Squamish for almost three years.
Speaker has almost 21 years of experience in municipal government. She is a certified general accountant and holds a diploma in Local Government Management from the University of Victoria.
Before taking on the CAO role in Elkford, Speaker was the chief financial officer in Prince Rupert.
Her first day on the job is scheduled for July 3.
