Prepare yourself, Whistler artists, for the most Whistler-est arts competition EVER.
Granted, the Prior Snowboards & Skis Topsheet Art Selection Exhibition isn't officially a "competition," but since artists are in the running to have their art included in Prior's 2013/2014 product line — a coveted Whistler gig if we've ever heard of one — we'll just call it what it is: a competition.
Through the inaugural Art Selection Exhibition, Prior (in a partnership with the Whistler Arts Council) wants to find out from the public what images best represent Sea to Sky lifestyle and culture.
Selected artist works will then be displayed at Scotia Creek Gallery in Millennium Place, beginning Oct. 1, where the general public will vote on which pieces will be included for Prior's product line. Voting will close on Oct. 21.
Selected artists will receive cash payment for the use of their artwork, along with a custom built ski or board with their artwork on it.
Artists are asked to submit their work in either a 34cm x 190cm size, or a scaled down version of these dimensions. Any flat visual pieces will be considered, including photographic, digital, painted, sketched, stencil and spray-painted works.
The Exhibition is open to all Whistler, Pemberton and Squamish residents. The deadline is Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11:59 p.m. For guidelines and application forms, visit www.priorsnow.com/topsheet-exhibition
G0 hear some chamber music...
Yeah, bass music is all the rage these days and, sure! nothing beats a solid rock show every now and again (especially when its free), but what about chamber music?
Yeah, you know, orchestrated music, like the VSO (which you all saw and loved last month), but with fewer people.
Next Thursday, Aug. 23, Whistler-born violinist Jane Reid will perform with two fellow University of Victoria music grads in the Cordillera Trio, who are playing at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church. Reid, along with pianist Karl Hirtzer and cellist Nathan Jacklin, will perform Brahms, Beethoven and a modern piece by Quebec composer Nicholas Gilbert.
Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Entry is by donation. The trio will also perform in Victoria and New Westminster.
Then go buy sexy calendar at a shopping mall
Big news on the calendar front: the 2013 Whistler Exposed calendar has been picked up by The Calendar Club, which means it will be available at 200 kiosk locations across Canada.
What does this mean, exactly? Well, now you can purchase the calendar after visiting your local Kernel's popcorn stand. That's exciting!
The calendar's fourth edition features images ranging from a helicopter shoot on Rainbow Glacier, to a chairlift scene on Blackcomb Mountain and a rafting shot from Green Lake.
Tommy Africa's is hosting the red carpet calendar launch this Friday. Copies will be available for purchase and all 14 calendar models will be present to sign autographs. There will also be a video premier presented by Diamondhead films.
The launch will raise funds for Canadian spinal cord research. Since its launch, the Whistler Exposed calendar has raised $20,000.
