Parking in Whistler is now cheaper at municipal underground lots. Monthly passes for underground parking are now $30 per month.

It will be cheaper to park underground at the Whistler Conference Centre and Whistler Library, with reduced rates going into effective immediately on Thursday, Oct. 18.

Monthly pass rates for these lots are now available for $30, while hourly rates are now $1 per hour to a maximum of $10 for 24 hours of parking. That's down from $1 for the first hour and $2 for subsequent hours, with a maximum of four hours per space.

The change in pricing creates an opportunity to use the lots for long-term visitor parking with a maximum of seven days and a total of $70. You can also pay for smaller increments of parking, with a new minimum of $0.25 for quick trips of 15 minutes or less. The $5 flat fee for evenings is still in effect.

According to a release from the municipality, the new rates were create with the goal of "maximizing usage of municipal parking lots and staying competitive, while providing a wide range of parking and transportation options for residents and visitors. At one dollar per day, the monthly passes are an economic option."

The Resort Municipality of Whistler lots have to compete with their own free parking opportunities in Lots 4 and 5, representing parking for up to 2,800 vehicles. The current council under Mayor Nancy-Wilhelm Morden cancelled pay parking in Lots 4 and 5 last December.

As well, Advanced Parking, which provides parking in private lots around Whistler, already has a low daily rate of $10 per day for two of its covered lots.

For parking on Sundial Crescent and the Visitor's Loop (near the Greyhound/Pacific Coach bus loop), the price remains $2 for the first hour and $3 for the second hour, with a maximum of two hours. Parking on Main Street, Municipal Hall and Village Green/Crystal Lodge is limited to four hours with a price of $1 for the first hour, $2 for the second hour, $2 for the third hour and $4 for the fourth hour, or $11 total.

There are only a limited number of monthly passes available, and they can only be purchased at Municipal Hall between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily.
