A woman is dead and a man seriously injured after a collision between two vehicles near Brackendale Elementary School in Brackendale.
The accident happened at around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1 at the corner of Depot Road and Government Road. Each vehicle had a single occupant. The intersection was closed for several hours following the accident.
Sgt. Wayne Pride of Squamish RCMP said they would not be releasing the name of the victim at this time, but confirmed she was a long-time resident and married mother of two.
“We look at anything and everything, from the scene of the crash to mechanical inspections of both vehicles, and we check for any possible factors involved, any kind of impairment concerns. We look at all that,” Pride said.
He added that a special RCMP unit trained for such analysis began work on the crash site on Thursday evening.
“There’s follow up with processing the scene. They look at everything from skid marks to debris, location of the vehicles, witness statements, so we have some information on what happened and whether any charges are applicable,” he said.
Children had just been let out from the nearby elementary school and from Don Ross Secondary School, and Pride was relieved none had been caught up with the accident.
“We know the flow of the children, and stuff, and luckily the time was such (that none were involved). There were people in the area, unluckily the people who were witnessing in the area were traumatized as well. But no one was threatened with any injury, the way the vehicles ended up,” Pride said.
“That’s a major concern going up that way. There’s families.”
The man injured in the accident was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It may take several weeks for investigation results into the accident, Pride said.
