The operators of Maxx Fish and Moe Joe's are hoping to stay open later on Sunday nights.

Both have appealed to council for a one-hour extension on Sundays that would push back closing time to 2 a.m. in line with every other day of the week.

"Extending operating hours until 2 a.m. on Sunday nights will allow Maxx Fish to address a market of tourists and locals that would like to enjoy a party atmosphere on Sunday nights," wrote general manager Brenton Smith in a letter to council.

"Currently, there are no options for tourists that are here to enjoy long-weekend Sunday nights past 1 a.m."

There are several Canadian and American long weekend holidays that fall on Mondays, including Martin Luther King Day, Presidents' Day, Family Day, Easter Monday, Victoria Day, Memorial Day, Labour Day and Canada's Thanksgiving.

In his letter to the municipality, Moe Joe's owner/operator Greg Britnell said he believed that the time had come for this "archaic regulation" to become a thing of the past.

"I am excited to take full advantage of this amended policy, and to help Whistler's night life move one step close towards being the best in the world!"

This fall the municipality paved the way for the Sunday closing time changes when it amended its council policy.

Moe Joe's and Maxx Fish are the first to apply to have their hours extended.
