Sports Briefs: Riders shine at Sunshine Coaster

Riders from Squamish and Whistler headed to Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast this past weekend for the annual Sunshine Coaster cross country race, followed by the Mach Downhill on Sunday.

Riders from Squamish and Whistler headed to Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast this past weekend for the annual Sunshine Coaster cross country race, followed by the Mach Downhill on Sunday.

In the Coaster race, Squamish James Holden placed first in the 12 to 14 male category, over 40 minutes faster than the next racer.

In female 15 to 19, Jennifer McTavish of Whistler was first, followed by Squamish Mikayla Martin two minutes and 34 seconds later.

In male 15 to 19, Rhys Verner of Squamish won a close battle over Whistler's Mahon Lamont with just 20 seconds separating the riders at the finish line. Also from Squamish, Sean Fincham and Luke Di Marzo were third and fourth, while Jordan Hodder, Austin Reith and Spencer Wight of Whistler were fifth, sixth and seventh. Tobin Hubner of Squamish was eighth, Matthew Wentzel of Whistler was 12th and Harvey Luc of Squamish was 13th.

Jan Toom of Squamish was first in the 50-plus male category.

In the longer marathon category, Jose Miguel Carzo Gomez of Squamish placed third in the 15 to 19 race; Sarah Greenwood of Squamish was second in 30 to 39 female; Terry Evans and Russ Wood of Pemberton were fourth and fifth in 30 to 39 male; Cathy Zeglinski was first in 40 to 49 female, and the second fastest woman overall; David Reid of Squamish was fourth in 40 to 49 male; Tony Routley of Whistler was first in 50 to 59 male; Brandi Heisterman was first in the women's pro category; and Greg Day of Squamish was second in the men's pro category while Josh Stott of Whistler was sixth.

The Mach Downhill race was also a big draw.

Squamish's Mikayla Martin competed alone in 15 to 16 female, while Whistler's Jennifer McTavish was first in the 17 to 18 age group.

Holden Jones was fourth in 13 to 14 male, Bracken Camilleri of Whistler was second in 15 to 16 male, followed by Rhys Verner in third, Ethan Toom of Squamish in ninth and Luke Di Marzo in 11th.

Jeremy Null of Squamish was second in 30 to 39 male, Richard Bedford of Whistler was fifth and Jon Anthony of Squamish 25th.

In 19 to 29 male, Adrian Camposilvan was 12th and Whistler's Chris Draper 30th.

In 17 to 18 male, Spencer Wight was third.

In pro elite, Jordan Hodder of Whistler placed 13th.

Toonie Ride season underway May 9

The first WORCA Toonie Ride of the season takes place on Thursday, May 9, following a selection of trails in Lost Lake Park.

Registration is at 5:30 p.m. and the race starts at 6:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by TAG Cycling, Lululemon Athletica, Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub, BDO and the Nimby Fifty, with an après at the Dubh Linn Gate.

To take part, you need to be a member of WORCA. Memberships are available online at www.worca.com, or in person at registration — although it's always busy for the first races of the season and there could be a line.
