Canada takes gold medal in Olympic hockey

Whistler fans cheer on Canada

The Canadian men’s hockey team has won another gold medal for Canada at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, beating Sweden 3-0.

Fans all over Whistler took in the 4 a.m. game in their homes, at local restaurants and at Whistler Olympic Plaza.

This is Canada’s ninth gold medal in Olympic men’s hockey and its 15th overall since 1920. No other country has won more medals than Canada in men’s hockey at the Olympic Winter Games.

Earlier this week, Canada’s women beat USA for gold in a thrilling overtime victory. This marks the third time in Olympic history that Canada has won gold in both men’s and women’s hockey.

“Canada concludes these Games with another medal performance from our men’s hockey team. Team Canada provided all Canadians with exciting hockey throughout the Olympic tournament,” said Marcel Aubut, President, Canadian Olympic Committee. “To Steve Yzerman and his management team, head coach Mike Babcock and his staff, and to the all the players who performed at such a high level, I offer my congratulations on behalf of the entire Canadian Olympic family and all Canadians.”

The Canadian Olympic Team won a total of 25 medals at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (10 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze).
