Several Whistler riders were among top finishers at Hot On Your Heels, a women's-only enduro held in Squamish on Saturday, Aug. 2.

Local rider Sam Shook finished first on three of the four stages raced Saturday to win the open women's title in a total time of 12 minutes, 6.80 seconds, which was also the fastest time overall. Karaleen Giola was the runner-up, 22 seconds back of Shook, while Whistler's Simmone Lyons earned third-place honours at 13:00.88.

Squamish's Sabrina Horak (13:02.80) finished in fourth place, while Whistler's Kate Whitley (13:07.44) rounded out the top five.

Some other Whistler riders who rode to strong finishes on Saturday included Jennie Small (13th, 14:10.38), Rachelle Frazer (15th, 14:19.47) and Mackenzie Graf (27th, 15:03.01).

In a tune-up before she races in this week's Enduro World Series race in Whistler, New Zealand's Raewyn Morrison took top spot in the pro women's race, finishing in 12:11.26. Whistler's Leonie Picton finished in second place, five seconds behind Morrison, while third place went to Chilliwack's Aja Philp.

PHAT WEDNESDAYS WINDING DOWN

With just one Phat Wednesday race left to go, some series titles are still up for grabs following results from action on July 30.

The penultimate race of the season took 110 competitors down the Canadian Open DH course on a dry and dusty night in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.

Chris Kovarik, at 2:16.47, won his fourth race of the summer in a close one. Remy Metailler, the open men's series leader, finished just 0.44 seconds back in the runner-up spot. Denis Courchesne rode to a third-place finish at 2:20.06.

Metailler leads Courchesne by 135 points going into the last race. Although racers will drop their worst race score of the season before calculating their total in the standings, Metailler's lead is looking fairly safe considering the consistency he's shown this year.

But the master men's group is still up in the air after Steve Storey won last week's race in 2:26.08. Aidan Hamilton edged Ryan West for second place.

Storey has won three of the last four, moving to within 17 points of leader Shane Gayton, so a expect a good battle for the overall title between the two at the series finale.

Claire Buchar won for the seventh time this season on July 30 and looks to have locked up another open women's title. She finished in 2:39.57, while Christina Chapetta and Simmone Lyons finished second and third.

Remy Morton won the junior men's race in 2:21.93, and was joined on the podium by Masaki Kato and Jackson Frew. Finn Iles did not race, but is well ahead in the standings thanks to six victories this year.

No junior girls finished last week's course, although Stephanie Denroche has a big lead in the season standings with one race to go.

The last Phat Wednesday won't be for a few weeks, as the series takes a short break for Crankworx. Costumes are expected and encouraged for the series finale - the F-Cancer Chainless A-Line race on Aug. 27. The event has raised thousands for the B.C. Children's Hospital the last two years.

REGATTA NEEDS VOLLIES

The Whistler Sailing Association (WSA) is looking for volunteers to help out with the Whistler Regatta later this month.

The B.C. Circuit Regatta, taking place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 30 and 31, will require some assistance from folks willing to donate their time before and during the event.

Shifts that need covering include those completing prep work on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons prior to the regatta. The WSA is also seeking volunteers to help with registration, boat launches and meal services on the Saturday and Sunday.

Those interested in volunteering may contact info@whistlersailing.com for more details.
