Got a couch? Animal Nation needs it

Whistler hip-hop artists are touring Canada and seek 'spaces for tidy rappers'

Whistler hip-hop duo Animal Nation are about to start on a 16-gig tour of Canada in September with American rapper Tech N9ne and have decided to embark on a social experiment.

Mike "Armadillo Slim" Armitage and Garnet "Tall Man" Clare, along with two others, need places to stay in order to save on costs — and they hope their friends and fans can help.

The tour starts on Sept. 10 in Chilliwack and ends on Sept. 27 in Toronto. The dates can be seen on their Facebook page, Animal Nation.

A message to their 2,561 Facebook fans said: "If you or someone you know has space to put us up for the night of any of these shows please message or comment... if you can handle having some VERY POLITE, RESPECTFUL and TIDY rappers in your home/space for a night. Thanks!"

Clare says they have a few couches arranged but are still looking for places to stay in Ottawa, Montreal, Red Deer and Edmonton, among others.

Whistler Arts Council announces fall art classes

Puppets, art adventures, robots, and bling are on offer for the 2014 Fall Art and Design program run by the Whistler Arts Council (WAC).

Open to children, youths and adults, classes take place at Millennium Place

"We really looked at what kids and adults were into and created classes that met their interests," said organizer Rebecca Smith in a release.

"We also wanted to engage boys so we made a robotics class and an animation class. Jewellery was a popular request so we tailored a class to help people design their own silver earrings and necklaces. Once we came up with the class ideas we went out and found experts in each of the fields to be the instructors. I'm thrilled with the lineup of classes and teachers."

Youngsters can try out various fine art mediums in Art Adventures, beginning Saturday, Sept. 27. There is also a Fine Art Sampler for older youth who have the desire to explore different techniques and materials.

Children wanting to create a Muppet-styled puppet will enjoy Jesse Thom's creative class that guides participants to make their own fuzzy zany character.

Boys and girls can race their creations when they build a robotic beetle-bot on Sunday, Nov. 2, or they can invent characters for an epic battle on paper in Animate Your World starting on Oct. 8.

Adult classes include learning how to work with felt on Oct. 4, developing drawing skills on Oct. 20, designing jewelry on Oct. 25, playing with paint on Nov. 5, or discovering how to print their own lino-block images on Nov. 8.

All classes are open for registration at artswhistler.com/events/fall-2014-art-and-design-classes or at Millennium Place.
