Hollywood artist opens Whistler Sculpture gallery

Oscar-nominated B.C. sculptor James Stewart, who has produced work in films as diverse at District 9, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and the Narnia series, has opened a new gallery showing his work on The Village Stroll.

Working in bronze, his subjects are detailed human and animal figures, the largest weighing in at 7,200kg. The subjects for his sculptures came from his extensive travels around the world.

"For the last four or five years, I've been strictly doing fine art. I've been hanging onto Vancouver... moving up here is kind of my separation from the (film) industry," Stewart says.

"What I find so fascinating about my work is not the people itself. It's what emotion can I get from them to get across who they are. I am trying to relate to them and the viewer on a personal level."

A wine and cheese launch takes place at the gallery on Thursday, Dec. 11.
