Season-opening Nordic race held

Local skiers star in Teck Coast Cup's kickoff competition

Whistler Olympic Park hosted the first race of the Teck Coast Cup season on Nov. 30.

The race was organized by the Hollyburn Cross Country Ski Club.

In the 7.5-km open men's division, Whistler Nordics' Simon Bouchard-Robert was second, 2:17.2 minutes behind winner UBC Nordics' Elliot Holtham. Teammate Brent Murdoch was sixth, while Spud Valley Nordics' Rich Prohashka was 11th.

In the 7.5-km open women's division, Spud Valley's Sharon Leinweber and Jill Davies finished sixth and eighth, respectively.

In the four-km juvenile girls' race, Whistler Nordics' Benita Peiffer was first in her birth year and second overall, 10.5 seconds behind winner Anna Goodwin of Hollyburn. Spud Valley's Kaede Kawano was fourth in her birth year and sixth overall, and teammate Alisa Feuz was fourth in her birth year and ninth overall. Whistler's Julia Long was seventh in her birth year and 11th overall.

In the four-km boys' division, Whistler's Michael Murdoch was first in his age group and second overall, 34.7 seconds behind winner Tallon Noble of Strathcona. Spud Valley's Jonathan Rabung was fifth in his age group and 11th overall, while teammate Ethan Hess was ninth in his age group and 16th overall.

Whistler's Joe Davies won the two-km midget boys' race with a time of 6:45.5 minutes. Teammate Mila Wittenberg, meanwhile, won the same event on the girls' side with a time of 7:10.2 minutes. Spud Valley's Naomi Prohashka (third in age group), Fiona Davies (third in age group), Ruby Trand (fourth in age group), and Arriya Kuiper (fifth in age group) finished fifth through eighth overall, respectively.

Spud Valley dominated the two-km bantam girls' race, with Sierra Pochay-McBain finishing first overall with a time of 10:14.1 minutes, and teammate Marlie Molinaro finishing 5.7 seconds behind to win her age group. Alexa Hunter was third in her age group and fourth overall, Savannah McKinney-Lincks was fourth in her age group and sixth overall, Anna Prohashka was fifth in her age group and seventh overall, and Lauren Kish was fourth in her age group and ninth overall.

As for the two-km bantam boys' race, Spud Valley's Alex Feuz was second in his age group and third overall, while Lennox Davies, Arlo Trand, and Jack L'Estrange occupied the three spots behind him in both categories. Logan Sadan was sixth in his age group and eighth overall, while Haydn Kuiper was eighth in his age group and 10th overall.

For the 1.5-km peewee girls' race, Whistler's Molly Mackie was first in her age group and 7.5 seconds behind Hollyburn's Emily Mellor for the overall title. On the boys' side, Whistler's Sam Molinaro was second in his age group and fourth overall.

Lastly, Whistler's Talia Wittenberg won the 0.6-km atom girls' race with a time of 3:30.4 seconds. Whistler's Luke Mackie was third in his age group and fourth overall on the boys' side.
