The Whistler Youth Band is holding a spring concert, its first, at Millennium Place, on Thursday, June 4.

The band, formed just over a year ago to fill the need for orchestral education for Whistler children, has 12 members aged nine to 12, says director Randy Shaw.

"They've played together for just over a year and this is their first concert by themselves. They have played with the children's choir," says Shaw, a former professional musician.

"It has been fun and the parents are active and supportive. I think it will grow. There's nothing like it here, no school band. We were attempting to fill the space."

Members of the band are Micaela Day; Sabrina Gordon (clarinet);Helen Kim; Mallory Mellor; Miyuki Yamaguchi Espada(flute); Roan Isert(saxophone); Adam Brett(trombone); Jonas Christensen; Jesse Parker; Zenta Thompson; Christopher Cox(trumpet); and Dylan Boyd (percussion).

The concert starts at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation to the food bank.

Sea to Sky musicians — it's time to rehearse your best original songs for your chance to play at this summer's Pemberton Music Festival.

Be the Best, Play the Fest is a competition presented by Mountain FM and the Pemberton festival. Competitors must submit an original song by Sunday, June 21.

Eight finalists will compete in a battle of the bands at Live at The Meadows at Pemberton on Saturday, June 27, for a first prize of $3,000 and a spot in the lineup at the Pemberton Music Festival, which takes place from July 16 to 19.

Second place will receive $1,500 and third place will receive $500.

The competition is only open to musicians without a record deal in place, and performers must have ties to the Sea to Sky corridor or the Sunshine Coast.

Summer street banners artist named

Vancouver artist Sarah Turton has selected as the next artist whose designs have been selected for the municipality's Street Banner Art Program.

Her work — four designs on the spring/summer themes explore, admire, celebrate and cruise — will go up on light posts in the village in the next few weeks. They will be on display over the next two spring and summer seasons.

Whistler artist Ron Denesson's work went on display in the winter, and will again go up this fall.

"I think it was helpful in raising my profile. As soon as they went up I got a lot of response. The exposure was great and it's a really fun project," he says.
