B.C. is considered the most seismically prone area of Canada, which is why Whistler and other communities are getting ready for the annual Great British Columbia ShakeOut drill.

According to the National Building Code of Canada 1990, Whistler is located within Seismic Zone four, which means it is considered to be a high risk from earthquake damage.

The Great B.C. ShakeOut drill will take place on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 10:15 a.m.

It's an opportunity to practice how to protect yourself during an earthquake by following the three basic steps of Drop, Cover and Hold On. They are:

• drop to the floor (before the earthquake drops you),

• take cover under a desk or a sturdy piece of furniture and protect your head, and

• hold on to the piece of furniture until the shaking stops.

The province has also released a new guide this year for B.C.'s tourism sector, designed to help resort and hotel operators educate both staff and visitors about earthquake risk and the importance of being prepared.

All tourism partners are encouraged to learn more and register to participate at www.shakeoutbc.ca.
