Pemberton groups mark the calendar for upcoming events

Organizers want to know what's on, who can help

EVENT PLANNING Julie Kelly, a Pemberton Chamber of Commerce director, checks out one of the boards that chart upcoming community events in Pemberton.

It takes a village - especially to organize and undertake events in Pemberton.

As community events ramp up in spring and summer, organizers say they're at the point where they need to work together to track everything from the BMX races and bat-house building, to the Paddle-a-thon and the golf tournament.

"Last weekend, we had a whole lot of people here with the BC Snowmobiler Federation, and we didn't know about it," said Mark Mendonca, President of Tourism Pemberton and a Chamber of Commerce director.

Issues of over-booking and under-promoting are the concerns for local non-profilt groups. In an earlier press release, Shirley Henry, Chamber Secretary and Treasurer, said, "the important thing, whatever technology we deploy, is to ensure that we are working together to schedule and promote all the amazing offerings this community puts on."

About 40 people attended the community group meeting April 7 to spearhead the drive for a multi-user calendar to keep track of events - from about 20 in April to a dozen in August. As well, another Chamber Director, Julie Kelly, highlighted the need to target volunteers on the communal calendar.

Kelly, who helps with the local Ironman event, says she gets 50 volunteers. "There should be a spot on the calendar for volunteer numbers - for a pool of volunteers we can reach out to."
