Dozens of volunteers and community groups will make sure Whistler stays beautiful next week on Pitch-In Day, the annual roadside cleanup that spans from Function Junction to Emerald Estates.
The RMOW has been organizing Pitch-In Day since 1989, with volunteers clearing litter left in subdivision roadside ditches across town.
“One goal is to contribute to changing littering behaviour,” read a municipal release. “Garbage left in ditches is easily blown or washed into creeks, forests, and other sensitive areas.”
Last year, 1.5 tonnes of litter was collected by 150 volunteers. RMOW roads staff will remove yellow litterbags from the clean-up sites and sort recyclables.
A number of community organizations will be lending a hand this year, including the Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, Village Hosts, Whistler Youth Soccer Club, Whistler Skating Club, Whistler Takewondo and Whistler Area Residents for the Environment. Participating schools are the Whistler Waldorf School, Whistler Secondary and Spring Creek Elementary School.
Those interested in taking part on April 23 should contact Andrew Finnerty at affinnerty@whistler.ca to be assigned a location. Participants will be rewarded with a free barbecue hosted by the Whistler Firefigters Association, with food and drink donated by Nesters, IGA and The Grocery Store.
Yard waste can be dropped off year-round at the Waste Transfer Station in the Callaghan for a tipping fee.
