Farragut North is a play about power. It's a play about politics and ambition and what people will do, or not do, to get to the head of the pack.…

Relief will soon be coming for those nostalgic for the heady days of 1970s Whistler. The Whistler Museum and Archives Society will digitize the entire collection of the satirical Whistler Answer for inclusion on its website.…

Squamish folk rockers play Pemberton Hotel Friday

Take it from the name, folks: Tantalus Pass might just be the quintessential Squamish band. The members knew from the outset that their sound captured the town's mountain vibe, with a rustic folk rock combined with an electrified bluegrass.…

Maybe it's because crackheads broke into my truck last night (and stole nothing) or maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety, but if you ask me there is a large percentage of today's society who could use a stern talking to. And by "talking to" I mean a bullet to the head.…

Chili Thom wins his first art award...EVER
by Stephen Smysnuik
Whistler's former, Squamish's current visual arts superstar Chili Thom is now officially Canada's favourite landscape artist...according to Canadian artists. Thom won the Federation of Canadian Artists "Best in Show" award in the landscape category for his painting "The Green Giant."…

Despite the fresh snow in the alpine or whatever the Gregorian calendar says, it's officially summer — or at least Summer Blockbuster Season. Marvel's The Avengers opens this week and as soon as the first two-hour-plus movie with a budget over $200 million hits screens then you know the Hollywood studios are going for it — less brains, more brawn, let's make some frickin' money!…

Film and stage actor Heather Feeney performs one-woman cabaret show at the BAG tonight
by Stephen Smysnuik
Heather Feeney is bringing a little New York to Squamish. The Squamish-based film and stage actress and mother of two has been absent from the stage for five years — whisked away, as it were, by motherhood — and is now returning, with Love, Laugh, Cry and the Music of Your Life, a two-night, 18-song, one-woman musical theatre cabaret this Saturday and Sunday.…

Intersection winners Voleurz are more than just a brand
by Stephen Smysnuik
When Voleurz won its second Intersection in a row, the Whistler Conference Centre erupted in a torrent of hollers from the crowd. The Vancouver-based company, already renowned in Whistler for its multi-sport snow films, had secured a title as undefeated champions of the TWSSF's latest, and some are already saying greatest, event — Intersection, an action-sport film-making competition that seems designed specifically for Voleurz.…

The Jezabels aren't trying to change the world but if it happens, well, they won't complain. The moody Sydney-based indie rockers have cemented a reputation as rising stars down under, with a best-selling debut album and an Australia Music Prize under their belts.…

The fate of Jazz on the Mountain at Whistler (JOMAW) is currently in limbo. Festival organizer Arnold Schwisberg, who is still waiting on a $150,000 Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) contribution from the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW), has been unable to secure Kool & the Gang, who were slated to play a free show as part of the festival.…

JOMAW founder Arne Schwisberg asks for $150,000 in RMI funds
by Stephen Smysnuik
Jazz on the Mountain at Whistler (JOMAW) will not return for 2012 unless the municipality steps up with money and conceptual help. The festival's founder and producer Arnold Schwisberg is asking for increased engagement from Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) staff, as well as $150,000 in Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) funds to help alleviate the festival's $500,000-plus deficit — a deficit that Schwisberg contends is the result of the RMOW's mismanagement of the jazz festival brand.…

It's sappy romance week at the Whistler Village 8 and the Garibaldi 5 in Squamish as the latest big-screen adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks book drops this Friday. Sparks is the author of such bodice-ripping-novels I've never read as The Notebook, The Last Song, Nights in Rodanthe and Dear John and Hollywood studios love that his stories come with a built-in literary audience.…

If you've ever had a childhood, chances are you spent a little time contemplating what alternate realities might look like. A child's imagination is boundless, unyielding and completely indiscriminate in where it will fly.…

I'm not sure what's opening locally this week but the good news is that The Three Stooges movie that drops on Friday is written and directed by the Farrelly Brothers. The Farrellys, as pointed out last week, are pretty much the founding fathers of contemporary cinematic comedy thanks to Dumb and Dumber and especially 1998's There's Something About Mary — the movie that somehow okayed semen as a bankable source of laughs and opened the floodgates for American Pie, Old School and Judd Apatow's camp.…
