For well over 1,000 racers taking part in the Squamish Super Spartan race this weekend, there is no way to know exactly what to expect. The 12-kilometre course is based out of Brennan Park, but other than that it's a mystery. The organizers are promising fire, mud, water, barbed wire, "and occasionally Hell on Earth." You can get a sense of what's going to be on the course by watching videos on the organization's website, but they're also promising a few obstacles which will catch participants off guard.

You can race the event solo or as a member of a team with a minimum of four members. Being part of a team can help as members assist one another through the obstacles.

The first heats leave Brennan Park at 9 a.m. with 250 athletes in each heat, and up to nine heats leaving during the course of the day. The first heat is considered the "elite" group for competitive racers, which are expected to take up to 90 minutes to finish the course. The slowest times are expected to be around three hours.

Event registration closed on Wednesday, Sept. 19 with the race about 75 per cent full, but additional registration may be available. For more, visit www.spartanrace.com and look for the link to Squamish.
