The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will play a series of summer 2014 concerts in Whistler, starting on Canada Day and again on Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5, the U.S. Independence Day weekend.

They are part of the Whistler Presents 2014 Summer Concert Series.

The VSO will perform three full-orchestra outdoor concerts at Whistler Olympic Plaza, including a special afternoon concert in celebration of Canada Day.

There will also be six chamber concerts in Whistler Village with brass quintets and string quartets.

The concert series starts on the weekend of Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29 with all-ages concerts featuring popular musicians who are yet to be announced.

“We are thrilled to have the VSO return to Whistler to commence our summer programming with an outstanding five days of orchestral music in the mountains,” said Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden in a release.

This will be the third consecutive year that the VSO has performed in Whistler. Each year the programming has been expanded and enhanced, with last year’s programming drawing 10,000 people over two nights.

The VSO’s repertoire will be confirmed in the spring, and each classical music performance will be unique.

The performances on Canada Day will be in addition to Whistler’s traditional parade and fireworks. All performances will be free of charge.

“It is a great pleasure for the VSO to perform in one of the most beautiful concert settings in the world,” said Jeff Alexander, President and CEO of VSO. "We are delighted our performances at the Whistler Olympic Plaza have become an annual event.”

The VSO programming is made possible by the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) funding from the Province of British Columbia and is part of the RMOW’s Festivals, Events and Animation Program.

More details will be released in 2014.
