Close to 400 athletes were at the start for the annual 5 Peaks Whistler trail run, with athletes taking on a tough 10.6 enduro course with 645 metres of elevation gain around the Blackcomb alpine, or a 6.4km sport course with 360 metres of climbing. As well, there was a three-kilometre kid's race.

Registration was down slightly for this year with Ironman Canada taking place the following day, but as predicted there were a lot of last minute entries as friends and family members of Ironman athletes signed up.

Arc'Teryx ultrarunner Adam Campbell from Vancouver, who recently won the Squamish 50, came out and laid down a fast time of 58 minutes and 40 seconds, averaging a kilometre every five minutes and 27 seconds. Silas Wiefelspuett of Squamish didn't let Campbell out of his sight and finished a close second in 58:40, followed closely by Delta's Justin Hains in 58:43. Hains also won the men's 20 to 29 race, while Campbell and Wiefelspuett were in the 30 to 39 category.

Whistler's Colin Foley turned a few heads with his fourth place, 59:28 finish. Foley, a member of the Callaghan Valley Training Centre — a national training centre for cross-country skiing athletes — was racing in the men's 15 to 19 category. His teammates, Sam Morris and Geoffrey Richards, were sixth and seventh, with Morris finishing second in 15 to 19 and Richards second in 20 to 29. Other CVTC racers include Ben Osorio in 12th and Sebastien Dandurand in 14th.

On the women's side, Morgan Arritola of Ketchum, Idaho placed 10th overall in 1:00:59. Whistler's Tara Gorman was second in 1:06:31 with Anne-Marie Madden placing in 1:07:27. There were 210 people in that category.

Other Whistler athletes on the podium include Jake Breuer (third in male 20 to 29), Kevin Hodder (second in 40 to 49), Laura Bestow (third in 20 to 29), Mick Peatfield (third in 50 to 59), Louise Oliver (third in 40 to 49) and Cathy Jenkins (second in 50 to 59).

On the sport course, Max Lister of Vancouver was first in 36:15, followed by Michael Olson of Oregon in 37:23 and Thilo Tecklenburg of West Vancouver in 38:01.

North Vancouver's Emily Goodwin was the top female in sixth overall, finishing in 39:09. Kim Taylor of Vancouver was second in 41:59 and Rachel Sanchez of Vancouver third in 43:06. Sanchez was also first in the women's 30 to 39 category, Taylor was first in 20 to 29 and Goodwin first in 15 to 19.

The fastest Whistler athlete was Kyle Moen in seventh overall in 40:01, while Pemberton's Joe Davies was the top under-14 racer in eighth overall, posting a time of 40:26.

Other Whistler runners on the podium include Liam Wooltorton (third in 20 to 29) and Mason Stern (second in 14 and under).

The fifth and final race in the series is at the 5 Peaks race at Buntzen Lake on Sept. 28. For more information visit www.5peaks.com.
