Anglers host family fishing event

Communities around the province are celebrating B.C.’s Family Fishing Weekend, timed as always to coincide each year with Father’s Day.

Communities around the province are celebrating B.C.’s Family Fishing Weekend, timed as always to coincide each year with Father’s Day.

In Whistler, the Whistler Angling Club is hosting a Father’s Day fishing event at Lakeside Park, with free canoe rentals, free gear, and a barbecue.

Registration runs from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., after which point participants can borrow boats donated by Whistler Backroads, or stake out spots around the lake from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Family Fishing Society of B.C. is providing some gear for participants to use, as well as prizes, and members of the Whistler Angling Club will be on hand to give advice and demonstrate how to use the gear.

Following the fishing event, the Whistler Angling Club is hosting a free barbecue for participants, sponsored by Nesters Market.

Organizer Paul Beswetherick emphasizes that the event is not a fundraiser.

“It’s more about enjoying the social aspects of fishing, and getting people out to experience fishing and outdoors,” he said. “It’s purely to promote fishing.”
