Want some good gear while having some good beer?

Well this year’s fundraiser for the Canadian Avalanche Association, the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association, and the Dave Sheets Foundation, promises both.

The third annual event will be held April 8 at the Longhorn, starting at 6 p.m.

It’s a way for the community to say thank-you to all those who work to keep locals and visitors safe from avalanches, said John Barber, of Whistler’s Best Promotions, who organizes the event.

"This is really a locals events and it says we appreciate what all they are doing," he said.

In the last two years the fundraiser has gathered close to $10,000.

Last year the organizers also decided to give a $500 bursary to the paramedics to help them purchase clothing for backcountry rescues.

"We are going to do the same this year," said Barber adding that the short, white sleeved shirts that are standard issue for paramedics just aren’t much good in the backcountry.

Tickets for the event are available at the Longhorn for $25. That gets you a saloon supper and a couple of adult beverages. The Longhorn is donating all the food and drinks so 100 per cent of the ticket money will go to the beneficiaries.

The music is also being donated by the Hairfarmers and thousands of dollars worth of prizes are available at the silent auction.

Everything from a complete backcountry kit donated by Atomic to heli-skiing and great gear.

Anyone interested in donating prizes can contact Barber at 604-932-1822.

Sheets, 31, died of a head injury on the afternoon of Feb. 12, 2003 after an accidental collision with another skier. The foundation, which raises money for acute care health equipment, was founded shortly after.
