A group of 11 commercial galleries in Whistler banded together recently to form the Whistler Gallery Association, and the first order of business is to give your liver a break.

Beginning on Dec. 26, the group will host Wednesday Night Gallery Walks during the après ski hours of 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. (traditionally dedicated to enjoying a post-ski pint) to nudge visitors and locals to check out participating galleries.

"The purpose of the walks is to encourage visitors to visit Whistler's premier galleries as part of their leisure time experience, and to promote greater awareness of the variety and quality of art available in Whistler to both visitors and locals," the organization says in a press release.

To that end, the association is currently distributing maps of the galleries, along with information cards to hotels, tourism organizations and other tourist hot spots. Participating galleries — including nine in the village and two in Function Junction — will also have signs up.

Search for singers

If you're one of those countless music fans obsessed with the four jillion (give or take) competitive singing shows on TV, now is your chance to get off the couch and in on the action.

Variety's Got Talent is currently looking for young B.C. singers to participate in its third annual competition. Singers, ages 13 to 29, are encouraged to submit an audition video between Jan. 2 and 16 with a two to three minute sample of their singing chops, either a capellla or accompanied by music.

The winner will receive a rising star music package, including a Tom Lee gift certificate, songwriting lessons and more, along with the opportunity to perform on the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon on Global TV Feb. 16. For more information or to submit a video visit www.varietysgottalent.ca.

Christmas carollers perform

Admit it. You've been sympathizing with the Grinch a little this year, haven't you? All those presents to buy, decorating to do, people to see. It can be a little overwhelming. Help your heart grow three sizes with some Christmas concerts, beginning Dec. 22 with the Whistler Children's Chorus.

The group will be holiday carolling at the Delta Village Suites at 5 p.m. on Saturday and again at the Whistler Hilton at 5 p.m. Sunday. Also Sunday, the Whistler Singers will meet at the village host booth in Whistler Olympic Plaza at 6 p.m. to travel through the village singing Christmas tunes.

As a grand finale of sorts, both the Whistler Children's Chorus and the Whistler Singers will be performing at the 29th annual Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols on Dec. 24 at the Emerald Ballroom in the Westin at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to the interdenominational carol service.
