A 24-year-old Australian man has been sentenced to jail after he assaulted a Village Host volunteer near Lost Lake last month.
Alec Currie, of New South Wales, was walking on the Nordic trails in Lost Lake Park on Jan. 22 when he was confronted by a volunteer and became belligerent, pushing her to the ground, stealing her portable radio and fleeing the scene, police said.
He was sentenced to 45 days of jail, concurrent with time served for two other separate offences, on one count of theft under $5,000, one count of mischief, one count of assault and one count of willfully resisting a peace officer. He is also required to pay a $200 fine for each count.
LeClair said the man would be deported to Australia after serving his sentence.
Alleged Peeping Tom arrested on criminal harrassment charges
Whistler police have been investigating multiple reports of obscene phone calls in the past few months, and finally nabbed their suspect after he was allegedly seen peering into a woman's window.
On Monday, Feb. 23, a woman and her roommate attended the detachment to report that they had witnessed a man looking into the bedroom window of their home in the 6100 block of Eagle Drive.
With a description in hand, police caught up with the suspect the following day. He was arrested on five counts of voyeurism, but now also faces multiple counts of criminal harassment after police linked him to a series of obscene phone calls to women dating back to late 2014.
In one reported instance, a worker at a village store told officers that a male caller with a blocked phone number had been repeatedly calling her at the shop, and in January made "comments of a graphic sexual nature", said Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair.
"There's been several instances of this nature with this particular (suspect)," he added.
The 52-year-old Whistler man is currently being held for court.
Bike thief caught red-handed
Talk about getting caught in the act.
Just before midnight on Sunday, Feb. 22, a man approached an officer patrolling the village after he witnessed another man dressed in black clothing with bolt cutters outside of a bike shop.
"He said that this guy appeared to be spooked and walked off," LeClair said.
Just minutes later, an officer witnessed a suspect crouched in front of a silver mountain bike with a pair of bolt cutters in hand. After observing the man attempting to cut the lock, police made their move and caught the man before he was able to flee the scene.
The suspect, a 40-year-old Surrey man with a history of property crime, had his vehicle searched where police found a number of items, including break-in tools, that could be linked to other thefts, LeClair said.
The man is currently being held for court while he awaits trial.
Whistler man arrested for cocaine possession
A 20-year-old Whistler man is facing drug possession charges after he was allegedly seen by police with a bag of what appeared to be cocaine.
On Monday, a complainant called police to report that a group of four people were making noise and smoking outside of her hotel window just before 1:30 a.m.
A subsequent foot patrol turned up nothing, before an officer noticed two men acting suspiciously at a rock wall near the hotel.
Upon approaching, police observed one of the suspects with a baggie containing what appeared to be cocaine. The other male had no drugs on him, police said, and was released.
