Big turnout for Snow Cross 

125 skiers and boaders under the age of 13

There was a huge turnout for the 13 and Under Ski and Snowboard Cross hosted by Whistler Blackcomb this past weekend. Some 125 young skiers and snowboarders took part, training and qualifying on Saturday and jumping into the race brackets in sometimes foggy and stormy conditions on Sunday.

In the Ski Female 9 and Under race, Josephine Howell was first to the line, followed by Kate Matson and Maia Matson, with Kaila Lafreniere in fourth. Freya Jumonville won the consolation race to place fifth.

In Ski Female 10 it was Rosie Smith on top after four rounds, followed by Maja Woolley, Jenna Tobias and Arabella Ng. Kate MacLeod won the first consolation race and Allison Shan the second.

In Ski Girls 11 to 13 the win went to Carlin Mann, followed by Iyla Nordin, Jennifer Shannon and Frances MacDonald. Gaby Morton was first in the first consolation, Anja Matson the second consolation.

In Ski Boys 9 and Under the fastest skier was Taylor Nellis, with Svetlin Tanchev, David Lee and Luke Haasen rounding out the final bracket. Jack MacDonald won the consolation race.

In Ski Boys 10 it was Blair Nellis up front, followed by Brendan Flynn, Eric Smith and Nikolas Rohde. Michael Mooder topped the consolation race.

In Ski Boys 11 to 13 it was Alexander Valentin who was first across the line, edging out Finn Iles, Cooper Bathgate and Jackson Bathgate. Jasmal Hasan was first in the first consolation and Alex Brooks first in the second consolation.

Finn Finestone placed first in Snowboard Boys 10 and Under, followed by Zakk Harman, Armaan Abraham and Brendan Keuling. Ethan Stroud won the consolation.

Samantha Deally faced off with Jennifer Lafreniere in two rounds of Snowboard Girls 10 and Under, each winning one and losing one. Deally was given the win as the top qualifier.

Willem Stroud was first in Snowboard Boys 11 to 13, followed by Devon Stroud, Axel Dixon and Jared Riseborough.

There are two more snowcross events. A 14-plus event is on Feb. 25-26, and the second 13 and Under event is on Mar. 17-18. Visit for registration and details.
