Bill Barratt, the man who has been at the helm of the municipality since 2005, has officially retired.

Pique has learned that Barratt, who said he would stay on until the Resort Municipality of Whistler found a new chief administrative officer (CAO), is now stepping away from the position after 29 years with the municipality.

It is understood that a memo was circulated to all municipal staff on July 7, praising Barratt for his years of service.

Earlier this year Barratt said he would retire at the end of June.

Council is in the process of hiring a new CAO, and currently doing interviews with select candidates. The municipality hired Caldwell Partners to assist in the search for a new administrator.

It is believed that Bob MacPherson, the general manager of community life, is to serve as CAO until the position is filled.

Barratt took over the administrator's role after his predecessor Jim Godfrey took the job of executive director of Whistler's 2010 Games Office.

More details to follow.
