This weekend, July 27 to July 28, more than 70 scientists will be scouring Whistler in search of living things as part of the annual Whistler BioBlitz event. The goal every year is to top the previous year's tally of species and over 500 species have been found each year, while 1,000 new species overall have been added to the list maintained by the Whistler Biodiversity Project. Experts volunteering at BioBlitz are responsible for a third of the species on the list.

This year's crop of experts includes three on arachnids, experts on fungi, a mammal-tracking team from Washington State and more.

There are family-friendly presentations by scientists from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, a Wild Things Scavenger Hunt for kids from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., a Night Critters walk to search for nocturnal creatures from 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, an exhibition of Swamp Monsters — creatures found in local wetlands and waterways from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, and the final showing of specimens at noon on Sunday.
