A team of forensics experts was in Whistler Saturday (March 11) to look at a wooded area where a human body was found Friday afternoon.
Staff Sergeant Steve LeClair of the Whistler RCMP reported that the forensics team checked in at the RCMP office in Whistler before heading to Whistler Secondary School, where a pair of RCMP members stayed overnight to ensure the scene was kept secure until the investigators arrived from the Vancouver area.
Access to the school was cut off Saturday while the police conduct their investigation. Journalists at the school through the morning were asked to move out by the intersection of Alpine Way and Highway to give the police room to conduct their investigation.
LeClair said the investigation is ongoing and it may be a few days before more information is released.
“The Sea to Sky General Investigation Section attended to conduct a preliminary examination of the scene,” said LeClair in a news release issued Saturday. “At this point, investigators are unable to determine anything about the deceased that would aid in identification.”
LeClair added that decomposition of the remains has made it impossible to determine with certainty if the body is that of a man or a woman. LeClair also noted that foul play is not suspected at this time.
A young couple out for a hike in the area of Whistler Secondary discovered the human remains Friday afternoon. According to LeClair, they called police at 4:42 p.m. LeClair said the RCMP attended the scene and did as much investigative work as possible until darkness set in at about 7 p.m.
The news led to a flurry of activity on the Facebook page dedicated to finding Mike Grefner, the Whistler resident who went missing in January after he failed to show up for a scheduled DJ shift. Many of his friends have posted messages indicating they are thinking of Grefner and hope he is found in good health.
The Pique will post more information as it becomes available.
