Buchar tops Womenzworx

Whistler's Claire Buchar is best known for her skills on a downhill course, but showed judges that she could air out with style as well at the third annual WomenzWorx event on Tuesday.

There was an open competition in the afternoon and an invitational slopestyle event called The Gala which takes place on the Boneyard Slopestyle course at the base of Whistler.

Of the five girls invited to the slopestyle three pulled out with injuries. Buchar and Stephanie Nychka, who was herself recovering form a broken ankle, soldiered on and hit the large jump, a few stepdowns and two wall rides without a single training run. While Nychka impressed judges with a huge drop that wasn't even on the course, in the end the edge was given to Buchar.

"I tried to make it smooth, hit my lines and have fun," said Buchar, who recently won the national downhill championships, and earned two top-10 World Cup results in Quebec.

Earlier in the day 24 athletes took part in two competitions - a technical timed race on In Deep, and a jumps and tricks contest on Dirt Merchant. Buchar took that title as well. She was followed by Lorraine Blacher and Kathy Pruitt of the U.S. Jamie Hill won the amateur category, followed by Lisa Mason and Rachelle Frazer.
