Whistler council has asked municipal staff to review Whistler Cable Television’s coverage of council meetings, it’s non-coverage of the all-candidates meeting last month and the cable company’s obligations under the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunication Commission. The motion, passed at the Dec. 13 meeting, came after council received a copy of a letter to the CRTC from White Rock Mayor Hardy Staub concerning Rogers Cablesystem Limited’s refusal to cover all-candidates meetings and a letter from the District of North Vancouver to Rogers with the same concern. White Rock city council unanimously endorsed a resolution that: "The City make a formal complaint to the CRTC, enclosing two letters the City has received from other municipalities expressing the same concern, and advise all other municipalities in the GVRD of this action." Rogers announced in October it would not be televising all-candidates meetings in the Lower Mainland prior to the Nov. 20 municipal elections because it could not provide equitably distributed resources and facilities for all municipalities. Whistler Councillor Ken Melamed put forward a motion for staff to review Whistler Cable’s coverage "to understand whether this council should send a similar letter to the CRTC." Melamed noted Whistler Cable did not televise the one Whistler all-candidates meeting held prior to the municipal election. There were also council meetings this past year, including the Dec. 20 meeting, which the local cable company did not cover. Melamed’s motion, passed unanimously, asked staff to review what the minimum requirements for cable TV programming are under the CRTC. Whistler Cable Television’s licence comes up for renewal by the CRTC next summer.
