The people behind Calgary’s bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympics crossed over the line, according to the Canadian Olympic Association. A video promoting the Calgary Olympic bid was being screened on national and Canada-USA trans-border flights by Canadian Airlines this month — until the Canadian Olympic Association found out about it. According to the COA, outright bidding for the Games is not supposed to take place until after site inspections by COA members. Site inspections of the three cities bidding for the 2010 Games, Calgary, Vancouver/Whistler and Quebec City, takes place in August. Mountain FM reporter Scott Roberts saw the video on a Canadian Airlines flight last week. According to the Calgary-based airline, the Calgary Olympic bid society approached them about running the video. It has since been pulled. In addition, Calgary organizers have apparently sent copies of the video and information packages to all the COA members who will vote on which city gets the right to bid internationally for the Games. That, too, is outside the COA’s rules. However, the COA says that Vancouver/Whistler and Quebec City may now do the same. In November the COA will chose one city as Canada’s official bid for the 2010 Games.
