Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival still has qualifying spots

The Ripzone Snowboard Invitational and the Garnier Fructis World Skiing Invitational, the marquis events of the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival, are still looking for a few good skiers and riders.

The Ripzone Snowboard Invitational takes place from April 11 to 13, with more than $65,000 in cash and prizes.

The main event is the Invitational Big Air on the afternoon of Saturday, April 12, featuring 20 top athletes, DJs, and a crowd of up to 15,000 spectators.

The Ripzone Superpipe Finals on the following day will feature 20 men and women.

The qualifiers will be held on Saturday for up to 60 men and 30 women, with the top 10 men and top eight women moving into the finals, where they will compete against some of the top names in the sport, including Keir Dillon, Guillaume Morriset, David Melancon, Tricia Byrnes and Maelle Ricker.

The Superpipe Finals will be followed by a SuperHit contest for the biggest and best trick, which will ultimately be decided by the athletes.

To be placed on the list, visit www.livelarge .ca and complete the entry form.

In addition, there is a pre-qualifier for both events at the Canada Olympic Park in Calgary at the end of the month. The top rider in each event will earn a spot in the Ripzone events.

The qualifier spots for the Superpipe contest are filling up fast, and spaces are being filled on a first come, first served basis.

New this year is the Invitational Ripzone Jibzone competition, a jibbing event at the base of Whistler with rails, boxes and other terrain park features. The event will include 12 men and eight women.

As for the World Skiing Invitational, which runs from April 18 to 20, there are still spots left in the superpipe qualifier on April 19.

Interested skiers can also enter online at www.livelarge.ca.

The qualifier is open to the first 50 skiers to enter, with the top 10 moving on to the Superpipe Finals the following day.

The World Skiing Invitational also features an invite-only big air on the evening of April 19 under the lights in Whistler Village. There will be live music, contests, and a crowd of up to 15,000 spectators for the event.

In total, $50,000 in prize money will be given away over the weekend.

The events are expected to attract the top names in the sport once again, including last year’s superpipe winner, Jordan Monk, and big air champion, Tanner Hall. Other names include Greg Tuffe Imire, Boyd Easley and David Crichton.
