Canada Post cancels PO Box program

Eight days after Canada Post postponed its PO Box program in Whistler because of residents' concerns, the Crown corporation announced the plan will be scrapped completely.

"Residents of Whistler have spoken, and Canada Post has listened," said Robert Sawka, operations and director for Canada Post Corporation in a press release issued Wednesday.

"We have decided not to go forward with having community mailbox customers include a PO Box number as part of their mailing address."

The program was suppose to see most Whistler civic mailing addresses switched to PO Box numbers which residents would have to register for each year.

According to Canada Post, because of Whistler's high second homeowner and transient population, many mailboxes in Whistler sit idle year round. The PO Box addressing system is already used at other resort communities, such as Silver Star at Vernon and Sun Peaks near Kamloops.

But many Whistler resident were frustrated when Canada Post announced the proposed program last week, saying it put an undue burden on home-businesses and unfairly penalize second homeowners who might not hear about the change in time.

But even though the PO Box program is off the books, Canada Post said this week it will continue to examine alternate ways to service Whistler "especially in light of the delivery challenges of the upcoming Olympic Games."
