Canada’s new ski magazine feeds off Whistler energy

Whistler will play a key role in helping shape Canada’s newest ski magazine – SBC SKIER – which will appear on racks at news stands, ski shops and resorts across Canada in the fall of 2001.

The publication is dedicated to the fresh energy and lifestyle that is said to be revitalizing skiing in this country and around the world, from progressive freestyle in terrain parks, to backcountry descents and all-mountain freeskiing at resorts.

And Whistler, says SKIER publisher Steve Jarrett, is "a worldwide epi-centre for the exciting new progressions that are redefining the sport of skiing."

The launch of SKIER was announced by SBC Media, publisher of Canadian sports lifestyle magazines, during the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival. Magazine staff are in town covering the event and consulting with the industry’s top athletes, photographers, film makers and leaders in preparation for their debut issue.

"With SKIER, Canada finally has a ski magazine that will recognize the talent that we have here," says Mike Douglas, a local freeskiing innovator. "Canadian skiers have been revolutionizing the sport of skiing for the past five years, but if you regularly read American ski magazines, you would never know it."

SBC Media has brought together an elite combination of Canada’s best ski journalists for the job, including renowned ski journalist Leslie Anthony of Whistler. Anthony is a former managing editor of Powder Magazine. He takes the role as senior consulting editor.

Also on the SKIER team is award-winning ski writer Robert Choquette, former editor of Le Ski and Ski Quebec.

"A progressive, authoritative presence for skiing on the news stand is long overdue in this country," says Anthony. "The unique synergies of the SBC Media group of magazines provides an unparalleled opportunity to do this and help elevate SKIER above all other ski publications in Canada."

SKIER joins a stable of other SBC Media publications including: Snowboard Canada, SBC Skateboard, SBC Wakeboard, Windsport, Kiteboard and SBC Business.
