Canadian athletes raking in the medals

Skiers, snowboarders and sliders racing to podiums around the world

Canadian winter sports athletes made a huge medal haul this past weekend, signifying good things for the season and the Olympics in 2014. The total medal haul was 14 as of Saturday afternoon, and the weekend wasn’t over yet.

In alpine, Erik Guay earned the team’s first medal of the 2012-2013 season with a bronze medal at Val Gardena, Italy.

In Ruka, Finland, the Canadian moguls team earned three medals with Mikael Kingsbury and Alex Bilodeau facing off in the final dual for first and second, and Justine Dufour-Lapointe earning a silver in the women’s event.

At Breckenridge, Colorado, Canada’s freeski athletes were solid in halfpipe, with Justin Dorey and Mike Riddle placing first and third in the men’s competition, and Rosaline Groenewoud placing third for the women. The ski slopestyle events are on Sunday.

In snowboarding, Dominique Maltais won two gold medals this week in snowboardcross, while Maëlle Ricker picked up a silver and Chris Robanske won a bronze for the men. Spencer O’Brien placed second in the women’s slopestyle at the Dew Cup event at Breckenridge, Colorado that was running alongside the men’s event. The snowboard halfpipe events are Sunday.

In La Plagne, France, the Canadian bobsleigh and skeleton athletes earned three medals; Kaillee Humphries and Chelsea Valois extended their winning streak in women’s bobsleigh, while Lyndon Rush and Jesse Lumsden combined for gold in the men’s event. Sarah Reid earned her second silver medal in skeleton as well.

Canadian speed skaters were also in action in Beijing this weekend. They didn’t win any medals on Saturday but have a few medal contenders in the mix on Sunday.
