A Whistler man escaped without major injury this week after his vehicle skipped an embankment before nearly landing in Fitzsimmons Creek.

Police said the 31-year-old was driving southeast on Blackcomb Way near the Village Gate bus loop on Tuesday evening, June 14 when his vehicle veered off-road, tumbling over a rock embankment and across the creek. His black Volkswagen Jetta suffered "significant damage," police said. The driver, who was taken to hospital for treatment, was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention.

Police are unsure exactly what caused the crash.

"(Officers) obviously had enough to issue a ticket, but it doesn't look like we have anything more in terms of what the cause was," said Sgt. Rob Knapton.

Highway bridge sees rise in vandalism: Report

Police are asking for information regarding recent vandalism of a Whistler bridge that has reportedly seen a recent rise in graffiti.

Just before 5 p.m. on June 13, police received a report of a male spray-painting the bridge at the corner of London Lane and Highway 99. The male is described as being approximately 5'7", around 18 years old, wearing all black with a bandana over his face.

"The complainant states that there has been an increase in graffiti to this area in the past month," wrote Knapton in a release.

Drunk driver tries to skip roadblock

A 23-year-old woman is facing drunk driving charges after she attempted to flee a road block and failed a breathalyzer test, police said.

At approximately 2:45 a.m. on June 12, the driver was seen trying to avoid the road check at the entrance of Day Lot 4. After initiating a traffic stop, officers noticed the woman "exhibited signs of impairment," according to Knapton. She was issued an immediate three-day driving prohibition.

Whistler police issued seven other roadside prohibitions over the past week, including for a 45-year-old Cincinnati, Ohio man who failed a breath demand at a roadblock on June 10, and a Dawson Creek male, 23, who was observed repeatedly crossing over the centreline on June 11.

Bikes reported stolen from parkade

Whistler police are on the lookout for two bikes that were allegedly stolen last week from an underground parkade at Nicklaus North.

The bikes, a blue Giant Reign men's model with red handles, and a white and grey Jamis Dakar bike with after-market pedals, were reportedly taken sometime between May 23 and June 4. They were both secured with a lock.

Mounties responded to another reported bike theft on June 9 from a storage shed in the 1300 block of Alta Lake Road. The bike is described as a pine green Kona Dawn Deluxe mountain bike.

On June 13, a Yeti 303 world cup downhill bike went missing from the 4500 block of Blackcomb Way. Police believe the bike's lock was cut within a one-hour window. The bike has a black frame, chrome handlebars, mag pedals and saddle.
