The Phat Wednesday Downhill Series continued on Aug. 24 with a chainless rip down A-Line. Almost 60 racers took part, many of them dressing up for the occasion.

Pascale Vaianni won the women’s event with a time of four minutes and nine seconds, followed by Fanni Paquette in 4:13.

James McSkimming took the junior race by almost eight seconds with a 3:34, while Michael Goldstein and Jamie Shingleton were second and third with scores of 3:42 and 3:44 respectively.

The men’s race was tight, with less than five seconds separating the top six riders. Adam Billinghurst took the win in 3:24, less than a second ahead of Jeff Beatty. Mark Fay was third with a 3:27.

The field was a little smaller than previous races with some top local riders heading to Europe for the UCI World Championships, and others heading to Mount Washington on Vancouver Island to prepare for the B.C. Cup finals this weekend.

In the prize draw, Rohan Gearing won the SRAM X9 drive train, Kristian Short won the Giro Mad Max Helmet, Andrew Gunn won the Mavic Rims and Kelly Walters won the Kokanee Day Pack. Simon Miller won the award for best costume.

The sixth and final race in the series took place on Aug. 31 on the Upper Whistler Downhill and lower National downhill course. Results from that race, as well as overall series titles, will be in the Sept. 8 Pique.
