Cheaky awards to get cheeky

Saturday’s Cheakamus Challenge Fall Classic Mountain Bike Race is considered the last big event of the mountain bike season.

Saturday’s Cheakamus Challenge Fall Classic Mountain Bike Race is considered the last big event of the mountain bike season. Although there should still be many opportunities to get back in the saddle before the snow flies, it’s the last big meeting of the larger mountain bike community until members come together next spring to build trails and race one another.

This year, to recognize members of that community who go above and beyond, the organizers of the Cheakamus Challenge are hosting the first annual Cheaky Awards.

On Sunday evening, Sept. 23, there will be a slide show and video presentation of the year in mountain biking at the BrewHouse, followed by a ceremony which will award "and roast" the legends and pioneers of mountain biking in the Sea to Sky corridor. This includes the trail builders, event organizers, and "the biggest loon" – an all-around character who adds an air of unpredictability and entertainment to the sport.

"When you think about all that mountain biking is in Whistler, it’s really the people who make it. This is just a way to recognize those outstanding people," says organizer Grant Lamont.

All proceeds from the Cheaky Awards will go towards the Youth Trail Fund Project of the Sea to Sky Trail.

Tickets are available in advance by contacting the race office at 604-938-1799, or at the door.
