Whistler’s longest running festival is for kids

Keep the kids entertained and inspired for hours at the 21st annual Whistler Children's Art Festival. The event is bigger and brighter than ever with an abundance of fine arts, crafts and performance-based workshops designed especially for young people.

On May 24 and 25, the Myrtle Philip Community School will bring together emerging and professional artists, artisans and performers to share their tips of the trade with Whistler kids and families.

Featured this year are workshops in improv for kids by Vancouver Theatre Sports League; magic workshops with Master Magician John Kaplan; fish printing on T-shirts with real fish by Kathy Bonin; terra cotta and glass painting with Jennifer Angus; henna tattooing with Marc Drost; fiction writing with the Whistler Writers Group; Video Viewpoint with Cable 6; introduction to scrapbooking with Sheryl Williams; mosaic tile with Sandi Atkins; painted floor cloths with Kathryn Hardy, news reporting with the Pique’s own Andrew Mitchell and many more returning favourites.

The festival includes a pre-school area for children aged 3 to 5, intermediate workshops for kids in Grades 7 and 8 and workshops for the whole family that run on both days from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Registration for all workshops will be Tuesday, May 13 from 2 to 7 at Myrtle Philip school. Pick up a schedule from the Whistler Arts Council office or go to the Web site www.whistlerartscouncil.com.

The Children's Festival Café will feature healthy snacks for the whole family and don't miss the second annual Rotary Club of Whistler Talent Show on May 24 at MY Place. This impressive showcase of Whistler talent features gifted musicians, vocalists and dancers from the area.
