Whistler’s community children’s choir, the Whistler Children’s Chorus, is entering its seventh year of rehearsal and performance. Started by Molly Boyd in 1992, the chorus has expanded from 20 singers in its first year to 110 singers in the 1998/99 season, with many of the charter members continuing to sing in the chorus. Last year, to accommodate the increase in singers, the choir was split into two: the junior choir, Grades 1 to 4 and the Senior Choir, Grades 5 and older. The choir will be dividing again this year, resulting in a total of three choirs: the junior choir, Grades 1 to 3; the intermediate choir, Grades 4 to 6; and the senior choir, Grade 7 and up. The Whistler Children’s Chorus performs throughout the year at many community events including the Remembrance Day ceremony, the Christmas Eve carol service, and the Canada Day Parade. They also present Christmas and spring concerts each year. In addition to local events, the choir annually sings for the opening ceremonies for the World Cup ski competitions and the Air Canada Whistler Cup. They participate in the Kiwanis Music Festival every April and, due to the addition of the Intermediate Choir, will take two choirs to the festival this year. In May, 1999, the Senior Choir realized a long term goal and travelled to California to participate in the Disney Magic Music Days in Disneyland. Next year the choir will also participate in Canada Sings! at the Plaza of Nations on April 15, 2000. The choir, co-directed by Alison Hunter and Janet Hamer, sings a variety of music, from classical composers to present day show tunes and Canadian choral literature. There are no auditions; choir fees are $35 a year. The Chorus is a registered society and receives funding from the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the Whistler Community Arts Council. Choir pre-registration takes place at Strut Your Stuff on Sept. 11, and rehearsals resume on Sept. 14 and 15. Tuesdays the Junior Choir meets from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and the Intermediate Choir rehearses from 3:45 to 5 p.m. On Wednesdays, the Senior Choir rehearses from 6:30 to 8 p.m. All rehearsals are in the Millar Room at Myrtle Philip Community School. New members are invited to join the choir, the only requirement being that they have a desire to sing and to have fun learning about music. For more information, call 932-2979 or 932-3068.
