Continental Cup ski jumping comes to Whistler Olympic Park

If you’ve never seen a ski jumping competition — and this is only the third official contest held at Whistler Olympic Park including this week’s FIS Cup event — the Callaghan is the place to be this Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 1-2.

If you’ve never seen a ski jumping competition — and this is only the third official contest held at Whistler Olympic Park including this week’s FIS Cup event — the Callaghan is the place to be this Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 1-2.

A field of top international jumpers is expected to attend this weekend’s FIS Continental Cup Ski Jumping competition at Whistler Olympic Park, as it’s the first open opportunity for jumpers to check out the competition venue for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Jumpers are expected from Canada, the U.S., Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, France, Switzerland, Norway, Finland and Sweden.

All of the competitions will take place on the large K125 jump, and reportedly jumpers are going big in training, and landing well past the 125-metre marker.

The first trial round takes place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the opening ceremony at 1:45 p.m., and the first round of competition at 2 p.m. There will be a National Press Award presentation to organizers just before 3 p.m., followed by round two of the competition and the awards.

On Sunday, the trial round is at 10 a.m., followed by the first round of competition at 11 a.m., the second round at noon, and the awards just before 1 p.m.

The jump venue is located 10 km up the Callaghan Road, and the entrance is about 18 km south of Whistler Village. The turnoff is just past the highway works yard, and the blue sign announcing the 2010 Nordic venue.
